Five easy miles around Saratoga Lake (not all the way around of course) with Natalie, Jeff, Kirk, and Liza.  This was after a nice little afternoon at the Saratoga Racetrack where I lost about 3 bucks betting on horses.  (I'm not sure if I'm going to make next month's rent after this.)

In the evening we went out downtown for Steve and Christine's "last" hurrah (tomorrow would be the real last hurrah).  Of the whole weekend, this was the worst shape I got in, though I have to say that all in all, I was pretty controlled.  About 10 people are stayed at a lake house to which everyone returned that night, only to wake up nice and early for tomorrow's race...

I woke up this morning at 6:30 after going to bed just before 3.  Zach's alarm in the adjacent room was going off since he forgot to turn it off (it usually gets him up for work during the week).  Steve had planned on running a race known as the Dynamic Duo, so despite the fact that I felt like I could sleep for another 4 hours, I went into his room to gauge his interest.  For a guy who just had his bachelor party the night before and could barely, stand at the end of the night, I was impressed with his gumption.  After I asked if he still wanted to run he closed his eyes for a moment and said, "OK, let's do it."  This was of course bad news for the rest of us, but we ended up fielding 6 teams (one guy + one girl) for the race.

The women start first and run 3 miles, a loop which finishes where the guys are ready to take off.  Our car got there about 4 minutes before the race went off.  Natalie ran decently enough and I had said beforehand that I would match her effort, whatever that might be.  I don't remember what she ended up running exactly, and I couldn't really see the clock anyway since it was facing the other way.

My split was about 16:17.  I didn't get a watch on it, but Jeff ran 15:45 and passed me doing it, so it's a guess based on that and the testimony of another guy in the race who was behind me to start and finished about the same distance away.  I guess I'll take that today, though I've certainly had more comfortable 3-mile runs at 5:25 pace.

An easy 1:20 in SPAC (a nice little park in Saratoga).  Ran with Steve (the groom to be), Natalie, Jeff, and Walsh.  Feeling the lack of sleep a bit, but still a nice run.

Later on, Steve and Christine get married and had their reception, which was good fun.  I'm not sure how I should log all of the dancing.

Home after the long weekend in Saratoga.  I took a nap this afternoon then went out for an easy run feeling pretty dehydrated and hypoglycemic.  I'm looking forward to recharging over the course of the week.  I also mapped out today's run just because I was curious about how I didn't end up at the res like I wanted to.

Started at the SU track and warmed up with a few guys who were doing a 1000's workout. Scott and I headed up the hill at about 19 minutes and finished the rest of the run on the trails, coming back at about an hour.  Good run except I got stung by a bee just behind the tongue of my shoe.  Did 4x100 strides around mile pace on the track.

Went to Onondaga, did a mile at 7:05 then another at 6:10 and figured I'd might as well get into it.  The next was 5:59 then a 5:52.  After that, I jogged 3 miles back.  Did drills afterwards.

AM:  3 miles on treadmill in the lab.  Sweaty!

PM:  7 miles around Barry Park and back (6.33 in 44 min) including 6 strides in the parking lot with jog in between.  Felt great.

Jogged around the practice fields at Ithaca High School with Tom H.  A good amount of it was barefoot.

Didn't sleep much last night.  My tooth has been hurting for months but has really ramped up the intolerable pain in the last week or so, to the point that it's woken me up for the past few nights.  I'm pretty sure I need a root canal.

Ran around Sapsucker Woods then down to Cornell where I stopped and bought a Gatorade at Bear Necessities.  After this, I ran further into campus, around Beebe Lake, and out the Horse Farms up to Hanshaw and back to Tom's.  Ithaca is great.

Ran up to the SU track and did a "drill mile"--basically four laps of alternating drills and easy jog.  After that, can you guess what I did?  I ran home.  Hard.

AM:  3 miles easy on the treadmill in my lab.  Waved to Eric while celebrating almost being done and fell off the thing, putting a gash in my ankle.  No big deal.  Yesterday's root canal hasn't been an issue.

Ran from the CAB out to Barry Park.  Did 3 x loop on the trail, which I think is just a tad over a mile.  I felt pretty crappy on the first one and decided to see how the second one felt.  Since it was better than the first, I manned up and finished.  Did some fartlek stuff on the way out and the way back.  Upon returning to the CAB I did some light lifting--nothing serious today with the 5-miler coming up on Saturday but I do want to get back into it.

Days like this are the ones I need to cut out.  Had a long day at work and was just feeling exhausted.  Took a nap when I got home, slept for about 3 hours, ate dinner, then went back to bed for another 8.  I wonder if I'm feeling any effects of the root canal.

Went to NYC for the Central Park 5-miler.  Started out with Geoff, Carl, and co. and then faded badly after about 2 miles.  I was hurting from the beginning for whatever reason--a little sore from squats but more just a general crappy feeling.  I ended up running 27:48 after moving backwards for most of the race.  I'd put this among my worst races in my life, but it's the sort of work I need for next spring.

Ran to the park and started out with the girls before I jumped on with Thom Little, Jay, and Noah for about 45 minutes.  Total run was about 12 miles.  Felt alright considering how bad yesterday was.  Did some drills.

AM:  3 miles on the treadmill with some grade.  Focused on good form mostly and thought about foot strike.

PM:  Ran on the canal path with Steve at a good clip.  We only measured two miles (7 and 8) , which were 6:08 and 6:15.  Slowed up for the last 2 miles and did a long stride at the end.  11 total.

Ran a longish warmup and then did hills with Steve and Scott.  We started with 3 long hills on the far side of Skytop, which ended up being something like 2:37, 2:29, 2:30 with jog down.  Then we did 3 shorter ones from a little over half-way up in 1:07, 1:05, 1:04 or thereabouts.  Hill running is so good for building up muscle fibers; you can almost feel the process in action.  I did some lunges, abs, and core later on.

AM:  Easy 8-mile "real-estate" run where I ran down to the reservoir area (SW Syracuse) and checked out houses for sale.  Did some core work at home.

PM:  3 miles on the lab treadmill slow pace.

Drove out to Green Lakes and ran with Steve.  Warm up of about 2.5 then 2x5k loop around the trail by the lakes at tempo with 4 minutes rest in between.  Ran 17:46 and 17:06.  Cooled down 3.5.

Ran down to Elmwood Park and back.  Too bad the trees there provided only about a mile's worth of shade on a hot day in Syracuse.  (Yes, 78 degrees feels pretty hot today.)
